Nathan Stewart Brown and Robert Clyde McNamara are going on an adventure. They planned this trip over 40 years ago while they were students at the University of Kentucky. Things came up and the trip was postponed. Well time has raced by and they aren’t getting any younger, so they decided that they better do it while they can. They are going to canoe and camp along the Ohio river from Pittsburgh to Louisville. They are going to re-trace Stewart's Scottish ancestor's migration from Pennsylvania to Kentucky that they undertook in 1790. Along with 5 other families they descended into the wilds of the Northwest Territory by keelboat to forge out new lives. There were many dangers lurking around each bend of the river. The resident native Americans were not too happy to see thousands of settlers pour into their homeland.
Stewart and Rob are going to dress in period attire of the late 1700's and try to paddle 20 miles per day. They are also doing this trip for a cause. The Rotary's PolioPlusProgram is a mission to eradicate polio from the planet, forever. They will be meeting with Rotary Clubs along the river. They will be able to share their journey with you via the internet. With today’s electronic age, video, photos and live feeds they will keep everyone informed of their adventure. They plan to leave in early April 2010 and arrive in Louisville, KY by mid May.
Our launch was from the town warf/doc
in Brownsville,Pa. Saturday April 10th
